The Wyse family, founders of the winery, are committed to Balance, a time-honored goal. A kind of Hippocratic oath (“to do no harm”) underlies the creative viticultural and enological practices at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery. The winery and vineyards lie within one of Canada’s most exceptional grape growing regions in the South Okanagan and Similkameen valleys. Each drop of Burrowing Owl wine comes from grapes grown in their carefully managed vineyards. Grapes are harvested manually, and processed by a gentle system of gravity flow. Cellaring is managed underground, with extensive naturally cooled caves for barrel ageing. Since the first vintage in 1997, the winery has consistently offered wines of ultra-premium quality, truthful to their outstanding terroir. These wines offer the consumer a glimpse into a unique wine region and the bounty of British Columbia’s Okanagan and Similkameen valleys.

The acclaimed success of the 9 varietals, including 5 of Bordeaux, reflects the outstanding growing conditions of the dry mesoclimate of the 3 vineyard locations. A wide range of grape varieties are produced, all displaying perfect balance of ripeness and structural acidity that enable them to age beautifully. All reflect the nature of those who so proudly produce them: consistent and gentle with genuine character.

The Vineyard

Burrowing Owl’s main vineyards (130acres / 53ha) are located in a prime location on the eastern side of the Okanagan Valley between Osoyoos and Oliver, British Columbia. The Black Sage bench offers a favourable slope, good drainage, and ideal sun exposure. Grapes grown on this bench have already attracted local and international acclaim alike. Eva’s 30 acre (11ha) vineyard is located on a south-west facing above Osoyoos Lake and a stone’s throw from the US border! The Keremeos 10 acre (4ha) vineyard is planted on the gentle south western gravely slopes in cooler Similkameen valley and offers classic conditions for sauvignon blanc. All our wines are made from estate grown grapes. All our grapes are harvested by hand.

The Wyse Family

Jim and Midge Wyse purchased and replanted the Oliver vineyard in 1993, after a free trade agreement with the United States, motivated growers to replace inferior hybrid plantings with traditional vinifera varieties. The subsequent success of these planting inspired the Wyse family to construct the winery. Jim, a civil engineer, supervised the design and construction of a state-of-the-art, gravity flow facility. Midge focused on the opening of The Sonora Room restaurant in 2003, and in 2007, an adjoining tasteful and scenic 10 room Guest House. Today, the second generation is taking over, leaving Jim and Midge very busy working on their several local and environmental commitments. Chris is the CEO of the winery and Kerri, his sister, the Marketing Director. With family values prevailing, you’ll find at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery, premium wines, genuine hospitality and a passion for nature.
